Symptom checker functionality has been added into the Epic’s MyChart portal by Mayo Clinic and EHR vendor Epic Systems.

Patients can use the symptom checker feature to measure common conditions such as migraine, swelling, anxiety, dizziness, cold or flu.

Based on algorithms, Mayo’s symptom checker is based on the data entered by users. It covers more than 300 common symptoms and runs 36 different algorithms.

Sandhya Pruthi, MD, a physician in the Division of General Internal Medicine and associate medical director at Mayo Clinic Global Business Solutions said “Care guidance, based on the user’s selection of symptoms and responses to relevant questions, includes more information about possible causes tied to the symptoms, and, in most cases, provides recommendations on home care in non-emergent situations,”

Users of Epic EHRs, both patients and healthcare providers has been offered Ask Mayo Clinic online by Mayo Clinic. The idea is to help other healthcare providers share the symptom assessment tool with patients.

Mayo Clinic healthcare providers and nurse expert provides content related to all kind of symptom assessment, adding that content is reviewed and edited on regular basis to ensure accuracy.

Within the MyChart portal, patients at participating health systems can look for the “Ask Mayo Clinic” in the navigation option to access online Ask Mayo Clinic.
