USA Health has leveraged Oracle Cerner EHR software technology to surpass care goals. The health system initiated a performance enhancement effort intending to decrease mortality rates through early identification and evidence-based treatment of sepsis. After implementing the new Oracle Cerner electronic health records workflows and alert algorithms, USA Health was able to reduce the sepsis mortality rate by 16.5 %.
Efforts of reducing sepsis mortality rates with alert algorithms and better workflows
A sepsis alert algorithm was implemented in August 2021. In October 2021 Cerner PowerChart Ambulatory EMR Software solutions deployed alert workflows and PowerPlans with client-developed sepsis content. Through alert algorithms, improved workflows, and alert response options real-time patient monitoring could be facilitated and treatment of sepsis could improve through early identification and avoiding a life-threatening medical emergency.
USA Health and Oracle Cerner collaborated to create a plan to integrate updates in the health system’s EHR optimizing their end user’s workflows. The aim was to move forward with a proactive approach leading to early detection and improving patient outcome levels.
EMR sepsis alert
The sepsis early warning or alert systems aim is to offer timely clinical decision support for identifying and treating sepsis. With a sepsis alert system, nurses can quickly touch base with physicians when they have fears that a patient could develop sepsis. Once the clinician is notified about the patient’s situation through the nursing staff they can select the appropriate antibiotic treatment with the help of an embedded antibiogram. An antibiogram is a robust tool that makes use of the local susceptibility pattern of pathogens to guide clinicians to make the best antibiotic choice for the patient
The implementation of sepsis alerts and workflows has enabled USA Health to reduce the sepsis mortality rate by 16.5% ultimately enhancing health outcome levels. By leveraging Cerner EMR software solutions the health system can support its patient care and deliver high-quality care. The combined effort from USA Health and Cerner technology has transformed caregiving plans for sepsis patients.
