Healthcare providers are spending a lot of time on EHR Software documentation. This has led to increased clinician burnout which has become a grave issue in the United States. Physicians are spending an estimated 16 minutes on their EMR Software during a patient encounter. Providers have to manage tedious clinical documentation during a patient visit. Patients have expressed that this gives them the impression that the provider is not giving them undivided attention and focusing on electronic health records documentation.

What is Ambient Intelligence?

Ambient intelligence in EHR software documentation is the seamless integration of smart, context-aware technologies into the healthcare environment. This concept entails combining interconnected devices, sensors, and data analytics to form an intelligent and responsive ecosystem that improves healthcare delivery.

Streamlining Clinical EHR Documentation with Ambient Intelligence

The good news is that progress in ambient intelligence can transform the EMR Software documentation process, by automating and simplifying it. The ambient intelligence is designed to draft documentation in real-time as patient and provider conversation is happening.

Ambient intelligence eases the workload of clinicians by automating repetitive processes like data input and documentation, freeing them up to concentrate more on patient care. By recording information in real time and reducing the possibility of errors associated with human input, this method also improves data accuracy.

Ambient intelligence also makes it possible for the documentation process to be more flexible and intuitive, customizing the user experience to fit unique workflows and provider preferences.

Epic EMR Ambient Clinical Documentation Integration

Beginning of 2024, Epic Systems revealed a collaboration with Nuance Communications for an ambient clinical documentation integration aiming to alleviate physician burnout associated with EHR Software documentation.

The seamless integration of DAX Copilot enables providers to record virtual visit patient encounters and in-office visits directly into the Epic EMR Software mobile app. A draft note is then created by the sophisticated technology in a few seconds to be reviewed by the clinician. The provider can make any required edits before the documentation goes to the patient chart.

It is as easy as pressing a record button. All the provider has to do is press record on their smartphone and start the patient encounter. This way the provider’s sole focus becomes the patient and he/she doesn’t have to worry about clinical documentation.

Benefits of Epic EHR Software Ambient Intelligence

The integration has benefits for both the patient and the provider:

  • Speeds up clinical EHR Software documentation
  • Patient experience is improved
  • The patient is more satisfied with the encounter
  • Physician burden is reduced.
  • The healthcare provider can focus on the patient
  • Improved patient care
  • Streamlined workflows
  • The provider experience is also enhanced
  • “Pajama time” is reduced as the ambient intelligence drafts a note in seconds
